# A home safe with a dead battery and no override key

The keypad is dark, the batteries are hidden somewhere, and the emergency key went missing years ago. What you can safely try, and what to leave alone.

Electronic safes are reliable right up to the day the batteries run out. Then the keypad goes dark, or lights up and beeps but the bolt does not move, and the override key — the small key that came in the box for exactly this moment — is nowhere to be found.

Before calling anyone, there are a few things you can try.

## Find the batteries

On most home safes the battery compartment is on the **outside**: under the keypad cover, behind a small panel on the front, or under a plastic cap. Slide or lift gently; if it does not move easily, it is probably not a cover.

Replace all the batteries at once, with new ones of the right type, and try the code again.

## Look for external power

Some safes have a small socket on the front for an external battery. Holding a 9-volt battery against two contacts, or plugging in a supplied power box, can be enough to wake the keypad for one opening. The manual will say; the make and model are usually on a label or on the front.

## Find the key

The override key is usually behind a small cover on the front, often under the brand logo. If the key is missing, look in the original box, the folder where the house papers are kept, or a desk drawer. Safes that came with a house often have the key tucked somewhere nearby, sometimes taped inside a cupboard.

## Things that make a safe harder to open

- **Do not try to lever or drill it yourself.** A safe is designed so that brute force jams it harder, and the result is usually a more expensive opening.
- **Do not keep entering codes.** Many safes lock out after a few wrong attempts.

## When to call

If new batteries change nothing, or the compartment turns out to be inside the safe, ring with a photo of the front of the safe and its make. You will be asked to show that the safe and the house are yours.

Safes turn up in inherited homes more than anywhere: see [an inherited house with no keys](https://locksmithaspe.es/blog/inherited-a-house-in-the-old-centre-without-keys/). And office safes on the estates have their own story in [locked out of a nave in Tres Hermanas](https://locksmithaspe.es/blog/locked-out-of-a-unit-in-tres-hermanas/).

Safe still shut?

Safes opened with as little damage as they allow, and new safes bolted down.
